MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is, as the name suggests, a form of fighting that draws inspiration from many different kinds of martial arts practices and traditions. It’s a full contact form of combat sport that combines both grappling and hitting techniques and can be engaged while standing or on the ground. MMA has become a very popular combat sport and is taught by a number of mixed martial arts schools in New York.
The Origin of MMA
Around the beginning of the 20th Century, a number of mixed martial arts styles and techniques were being developed and engaged in throughout Japan, Europe and locations around the Pacific Rim. It was in the 1920’s that the rigorous and more dangerous style of mixed martial arts fighting known as vale-tudo was developed in Brazil. This combat style was then introduced to the United States in 1993 by the Gracie family; around the same time that the UFC was founded: the Ultimate Fighting Championship. With some adjustments and additions to the rules and regulations of vale-tudo, making it safer, this combat style became the popular form of MMA we know today.
The Goal of MMA
The original goal behind the development and regulation of MMA in New York was to establish a highly effective form of martial arts that could be used in real-life situations involving unarmed combat. Over the years, MMA fighters incorporated a greater number and variety of martial arts traditions and teachings into their fighting techniques and the UFC countered this by adding its own rules and regulations to ensure the safety of competitors.
It was 1993 that Howard Rosenberg, a well-known TV critic, officially named this competitive sport “Mixed Martial Arts.” Since then, MMA has become an incredibly popular combat sport for New York residents to watch and/or to participate in. Today, there are a great number of MMA academies in New York City, offering residents the opportunity to become lean, mean, fighting machines.
