Brazilian Jiu jitsu is a more modern derivative of its parent martial art, Jiu jitsu, and is essentially a combat style that involves much grappling and wrestling, particularly on the ground. The emphasis of Brazilian Jiu jitsu taught in New York academies, classes and schools is to develop student’s self-defense skills. It’s a derivative of Kodokan Judo, a style of ground fighting Judo.
The History of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu jitsu was developed during the 20th Century by Carlos Gracie and Luis Franca who were students of Kodokan Judo master, Mitsuyo Maeda. Kodokan Judo is a form of popular martial arts that focuses on ground fighting using grappling techniques and a suite of chokeholds and pins. While Gracie and Franca were schooled in Kodokan Judo, they experimented and adapted with the various fundamentals to develop an altered form that became known as Brazilian Jiu jitsu. The core philosophies of this combat art are that, with mastery in its techniques, a smaller and seemingly weaker person can immobilize a larger and stronger opponent. This is particularly true when the person takes combat to the ground, where much leverage can be found for chokeholds, pinning and grappling.
